THE WILDLIFE REFUGE

La Barqueta beach, in the Chiriqui province, is an important area where
marine turtles come to nest. Due to this fact, in 1986, the Environmental
Commitee of Alanje together with Guarumal inhabitants put to work a program
of protection and conservation of the marine turtles that nest
in the place. The well development of the program move the National Environmental
Authorities (today ANAM) to create the Playa Barqueta Agricola Wild Life
Refuge, on august 2, 1994. The size of the refuge is 5,935 hectares.
